Emily Steffen, LSW

Licensed Social Worker

Emily specializes in the treatment of children, adolescents, young adults, and parents. She believes that developing a strong relationship and authentic connection with her clients is the key to a successful therapeutic process. As a former high school teacher and coach, Emily understands the demands that are placed on children, adolescents, and young adults. She understands the complex roles and pressure that her clients must navigate in order to succeed academically, socially, and in all their extracurricular and athletic endeavors. She strives to empower her clients to gain the skills that are necessary to set realistic goals, cope with life’s many stressors, and find balance in their continuously changing environments. Emily believes that, when working with children and adolescents, it is vital to create a strong alliance with parents, school personnel, and other supportive adults in the child’s life in order to help clients succeed outside of the therapeutic space. Emily also welcomes adult clients who are seeking guidance and support in the parenting process.

Together with her clients, Emily strives to create a safe, non-judgmental therapeutic space that is rooted in honesty, transparency, mutual respect, and trust. Her holistic approach allows her to tailor the treatment process to meet the unique needs of each individual client. Emily practices from a psychodynamic and client-centered perspective, and she is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Education: Emily completed her Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Chicago. She completed her clinical rotation at Compass Health Center in the PHP/IOP setting. In addition to completing training in mindfulness-based behavioral therapies, Emily completed a 200-hour training as a Yoga Teacher (RYT) and Mindfulness Coach with Breathe 4 Change. Prior to her clinical training, Emily was a high school teacher and athletic coach for over a decade.
